Five Things I've Learned About Blog Design

I know what you're thinking.

'HE CHANGED HIS BLOG DESIGN. AGAIN.' (Also that's the reason I haven't posted in a while in case you were wondering.)

And you would be absolutely right. *nodnod* Brilliant deduction, Sherlock.

The old one was too tight and cramped for me. I didn't like how the main stream was really narrow. Also, the lines in the background were starting to really annoy me. And I was having some tech issues with that template.

So yeah. That's why I switched.

I thought it would be immensely appropriate to do a post about blog design. More specifically, what I've learned about it.

free blog templates are abundant

It's not hard at all to find a free template that will fit your blog. (Something that goes beyond the like twelve templates blogger provides.) Just google 'free blogger templates' to start. Some of the templates are a little complicated, but most of them aren't too hard to customize. The only hard thing is finding one that you like and that goes with your blog. (Easily the hardest part right there. XD)

google is your best friend

Because while google doesn't have all the answers about everything that ever existed, IT DOES HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS TO TECH ISSUES. SERIOUSLY THOUGH. The key is knowing what to search for.

just about everything is changeable

The only trick with this is finding out how to change things. XD For example, HOW ON EARTH DO I GET RID OF THE TWITTER, FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, AND TUMBLR ICONS. It actually took me a surprisingly short amount of time to figure out how to BURN THEM. XD All in the blog html. (also google helps see above reason)

blog design is actually pretty fun

Okay so at first you're just a little bit frustrated and stuff because you can't figure out how to customize things but then eventually you figure it out. That's when it becomes fun. You can do a ton of things with your blog that you never would have been able to do if you hadn't attempted to use a more advanced template.

blog html is everything

Okay so I literally didn't know a thing about blog html until I got into designing my blog. All those letters and weird symbols meant NOTHING to me. But now, I can look at them and draw something from them. I can tell what a lot of them mean.

So. What do you think of my new design? (Also question: Does the header look strange since it doesn't take up the whole top? Or does it look fine sorta just floating in the middle?) Anything you've learned from designing your blog?

  1. Great post! Very timely considering I've had a lot of thoughts on blog design myself lately. I redesigned my own blog back in April and have already started work on a new design I hope to implement soon. I have to agree though, finding what suites YOU is the hardest part. I've taken to asking those close to me (siblings, parents) if the design reflects how they perceive me (since they know me best). Honestly, I gotta agree, it's really fun designing and redesigning blogs. Incidentally I like this current blog design you have much better than the old one, it looks way cleaner and more professional and I think it honestly goes a long way for people when it comes to their eagerness to read. Honestly, this is maybe your my 2nd or 3rd time here, but I think the first time I read a full post. So I looks matter.

Keep up the good work brother! :)

ALSO: nice photo on the sidebar! Having a photo upfront goes a long way too. I find it annoying when I go to a personal site (like a blog) and can't find a photo (or no up to date photo) of the person. It's not that I'm nosy, but personal sites and blogs are about personality, photos real a tonne of that.

    1. OOOH COOL can't wait to see your new design. :) Yesyes that's definitely a challenge. Especially when not only does it have to suit you it has to fit with your blog. IKR design is fun! SAME THOUGH it does look a lot more professional and cleaner to me also. *nod* Glad someone else shares the opinion! :D Why thank you. :)

      Sure thing! XD

OKAY THANK YOU SO MUCH because I've been trying to do that for AGES (like since I started my blog) but I couldn't figure out how (okay don't laugh XD). I thought I had to use the profile gadget thing, but that wouldn't work. Then I couldn't find another gadget that would work. So when I saw a friend of mine did something like that on their blog, I asked them how to do it. OH, YOU MEAN IT'S JUST A PHOTO WITH A CAPTION? *headdesk* Why didn't I think of that? XD

    1. Do you mean you can't figure out how to change them, or add them? I think you mean change... because most templates come with pages. XD (If you just can't figure out how to change, I might be able to help with that.) Okay here's a tip. :) With most templates, the person who made the template makes you give them credit. *points to the very very bottom of my blog* Right there. XD It's a really nifty thing to know when you're looking for a template. :D

    2. No no, parent pages. Wordpress has them, so does this theme, on your writing, there are pages coming from a page.

    3. OH OKAY those. XD I call the 'dropdown menus' but nuance. XD Well the link to where I got my design is at the bottom. *nodnod* But if you have a design you already like I can maybe look on my blog html and shoot you the html code for a dropdown menu. (Which should maybe work? XD We'll see.) If you have a contact page on your blog... not sure if you do though. XD

I like the new look though. Really. Truly. I'm a big fan of change. :) (As you can probably tell since I change my blog look like...I don't know...monthly? Maybe a little more like bi-monthly or every three months...but you get the idea. ;)

Thanks! Okay I'm also the type of person that changes things frequently... this design will probably stick with me for a while though. XD

  5. Your blog design, O Jonathan Trout, son of... Jeff(??) Trout, draws a small tear of magnificence from my eye. The simple elegance, yet modern decor is just fitting to your personality, as is every other detail I have failed to mention. I only wish you might refrain from straining my patience. I demand you post more, O Jonathan! Or forever will you be forgotten.

(XD. I have absolutely no idea where that came from or why I chose to speak like that. Although it may spawn from the fact that I am in the works of reading The Once and Future King, which was written in the '50's.
Also, please take no offence in that last sentence. I was taking to role of a noble and, as you may know, they're quite stuck-up sometimes. XD)

    1. Okay have you ever tried writing poetry? Because after reading that I think you probably could. :P Thanks though! :) AND YES I MUST POST MORE. XD

(Okay but jsyk it reminded me a little bit of your novel WHICH SPEAKING OF WHICH you didn't send out another segment on Sunday. XD Ah never heard of that one....
      XD Gotcha. :D )

    2. Hm. I never have written any poetry, because I can't ever think of what to write about. But maybe I'll try :)

Oh... Actually, yeah I just remembered on Monday, and I was going to send it, but then I got a little sidetracked (my dad rescued the cutest little kitten, which was stuck above our cars muffler) So... Yeah. I remembered again last night, but I was busy from 9AM-3PM today. I'll send it out today :)

  6. It looks really nice! This is literally my second time on your blog, so I don't remember much about the old design, but this one looks great! I am honestly not a fan of Blogger, because 95% of the sites look pretty horrendous, but this looks great! Nice work! I am (slowly) teaching myself web design, as in coding. I have made a few sites on Weebly and Wordpress, but I want to get into more of the coding and such.
Great post! Yes, Google is your friend. (In my case, Bing is, but nuance) Thanks for writing! God bless!
    Blessings,

  9. Jonathan, I love your new design! It's fantastic! Especially the top navigation bar - I really like the professionalism of the whole thing. And no, I don't think that the header looks weird not going all the way across. I think it's totally fine.

    Seriously, dude, awesome job!
(And I really need to get over my fear of HTML...haha.)

Half of me wants Blogger for the customization. GAH. I might just upgrade to Wordpress.org because I'm used to that platform. *shrugs*

    *high fives*

  10. I really like this new design and I should probably figure out more about the coding and HTML stuff so I can make mine look better but finding the TIME, man! (Also, I hate that kind of thing with a burning passion).
Maybe this will inspire me to try something new, I cannot get my blog to look like I want it with my limited blog design knowledge. :P Thanks for the reminder post!
