Five Weapons with Which to Slay Procrastination

OKAY SO I'M BAAAAAAAAAAACK. If you stalk my Google+ you know I was having some issues... for those of you who don't, in short I couldn't post. So yeah that's why I haven't posted in a while. But it sort of fixed itself so HERE WE ARE AGAIN.

Of course I still have to work out a few kinks... namely all those empty squares down on the right underneath the labels. None of the boxes should be there.... but yeah it's complicated.

I know how to get rid of them but my blog html won't save. Also for some reason the font colors on this post went a little wacky.... so yeah basically all that was to say buckle your seatbelts because there may be a few more changes around here.

Anyways.

This has been rants about technology with Jonathan. Tune in next time to hear Jonathan say 'HELP MY BLOG IMPLODED ON ITSELF.'

Let's just jump right into the post, shall we? (What, you mean you thought this entire post was going to be a rant about technology? Don't give me ideas.... )

goals

Goal setting is easily one of the most motivating things ever for me. I don't know why, to be honest. It just is. XD Make sure you don't set goals that are impossible, but not goals that won't challenge you. Aim for the perfect balance of stretched, but not stressed.

lists

Okay so this theoretically is really similar to goal setting. XD But I'm still including it as a separate point because making a physical list is different then just setting a goal for yourself. Plus, I'm extremely fond of lists. (This post is basically just a list. XD)

accountability

Basically this means have people that are willing to yell things like "WRITE OR WOLVES WILL CHASE YOU." (and yes that is a legit quote from my Camp NaNo cabin, or at least a paraphrase of it.) There's plenty of ways you can do this, like posting your word count goal on you blog, participating in Camp NaNo or similar events, etc.

schedules

This can be something as general as "I'm going to write every afternoon." Or something as specific as "I'm going to write every morning between 6 and 7." (not that those times would ever be reasonable for me. XD) The point is to have a time set aside for you to write, because then (hopefully) you'll be less likely to put it off. I'm really bad about this myself so I should probably work on it. XD

habits

Getting in the habit of doing something is easily one of the best ways to make sure it gets done. This sort of ties everything else together nicely. When you're in the habit of setting goals, making lists, and having accountability, procrastination doesn't become much of a problem. And that's what we're aiming for.

Have you ever struggled with procrastination? IT'S CONFESSION TIME. What tends to help you?

~ Jonathan

    Never.
    *nervous laughter*
Seriously though, nice post. Those are all very important weapons with which to defeat procrastination. When it comes to my writing they probably need to be sharpened for me. :P
By the way, concerning your imploding blog, all the sidebars are like, shaking on my screen. It's kind of funny but I'm sure not desired, just thought you might like to know...

Why thank you! Same though. :)

  7. Oh. So that's why I struggle with procrastination. I'm terrible at pretty much ALL of those five "weapons". Except maybe lists. I'm ok with lists. But the rest? Argh.
Well, now maybe...just MAYBE...my procrastination will get better after reading this post. But then again, maybe not. ;) We'll just have to see.
And about those tricky blogness things? Totally with you on those ones. My blog is constantly driving me crazy. My blog button (one of them at any rate) completely disappeared, and now it won't let me make a new one. I've been pulling out my hair (figuratively only)trying to figure out how to make it work. So far it has escaped me...so yeah. I feel your pain.

I have something I use when I'm procrastinating. It's kinda like something I go to last of all when nothing else is working though because sometimes I still don't get much done when using it. I generally only use it for schoolwork. Anyways, it's called 'the reward system' (creative, right? Haha jk) I have a cousin I'm really good friends with so for the reward system I'll message herand ask her a question or say something that kinda demands a response and then I commit to not checking her reply until I've finished a page of history. Sometimes it works.

    1. Whoa. O.O good for you! :D
Oohhhh okay that actually makes a whole lot of sense. *nod* I'll have to try that sometime... I do do something similar on occasion, like I won't let myself do something until after all my school or writing or whatever is done. :D

  9. Ahh, procrastination, my nemesis. When I procrastinate, I tend to be very productive, just doing everything BUT writing/editing/formatting. It usually takes my brain being like, "What is wrong with you? What are you doing with your life?" for me to think, "You're right, brain." And then I read some more, and THEN start writing again. NaNoWriMo/Camp NaNo is my ideal motivator. I am super competitive, and that gives me people to compete against. ;)

  10. HA. Dude, don't even get me started on procrastination!! YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I PROCRASTINATE (or at least I think you do)

YESSSS. THE QUOTE!! my favorites are
"WE ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE CABIN. WE GET KICKED OUT, THE CABIN DIES."
"No, actually I paid my neighbors cousins dogwalkers grandmother to pose"
    @Jonathan Trout
"THE CABIN WILL BE BURNT THEN TORN APART BY WOLVES AND THEN EVERYONE DIES."
"Lions and tigers and bears. Then the cabin will burn as us three look upon the leaping flames, high five then walk into the sunset as best friends and decide to take over the world together." @hannahrodzzzwriter

  12. Have I ever struggled. Ha, me? Never!

Ahem. Well, maybe I have a MINOR issue with procrastination. MINOR, mind you.

Okay, who am I kidding. See, I just procrastinated getting to the real confession! Yes. I battle procrastination CONSTANTLY!

I am very talented at it. :) It is probably one of my best skills. Honestly, your methods for fighting it are mine as well. I am a very "organized" person, so lists, goals, and schedules really help me. Thank you for the post!

  14. Is that even a question? Everyone struggles with procrastination, right? Like I'm supposed to be editing my novel, but instead I ended up on your blog. So obviously this is your fault, because editing is on my list today. Be the accountability and tell me to leave!!! ;)

Also, I did decided to join your cabin for Camp NaNo if you still have room :D (I have no idea how joining works, so just let me know if I need to do anything but wait for an invite.) Mary Horton would like to join yours, too, so YAY! I'm so excited and you're super awesome to include us :D :D

And yes, goals are t.h.e. b.e.s.t. I'm a goal-driven person, so they definitely keep me on track!
