My Fingers are on Fire: Here's Why

WARNING: Following the instructions in this post may or may not result in incoherent mumbo jumbo. And insanity. Only the strong will survive.

Still here?

Good. On to the post.

HOW FAST DO YOU WRITE? And I don't mean how fast do you type. I mean how fast do you invent words and throw them onto a computer screen in an order so as to make them coherent. (coherent is a key word here)

For me, it's typically 300ish words in ten minutes. (and that's word war speed)

But recently(ish) my friend Amanda introduced me to an app that does miracles when it comes to writing speed.

Interested now?

It's called The Most Dangerous Writing App. (If you stalk my Google+ you may have seen it already.) But it has that name for a reason.

A good reason.

*points back to the beginning of the post* REREAD THAT PLEASE. Because once you cross this point, there's no going back. YOU HAVE TO TRY IT.

Okay so since you're still here I'm going to assume you're willing to give this thing a shot.

What is this app?

The Most Dangerous Writing App is really self explanatory. What happens when you click this link (DON'T CLICK IT YET THOUGH) is a screen will come up that lets you choose your session length. I'd start with maybe three or five minutes.

The key is: don't stop typing. Otherwise you LOSE ALL OF YOUR WRITING.

THAT'S RIGHT. IT'S GONE. FOR GOOD.

It's quite motivating, for obvious reasons. Also it effectively kills distractions. (Namely, the internet.) Because you don't have time to do anything else when you're typing furiously.

So with that being said.

Try it. Now. I insist.

I'll even give you the link again: right here

Done?

Now tell me how it went. Did you like it? How many words did you write? Did you survive? Maybe it's not for you. If so, tell me why. I WANT TO KNOW ALL THE THINGS. XD

  1. This is such an interesting app! I like that you are timed and have no other distractions so all you can think about is getting more words onto the sheet. However, I am someone who likes to put a lot of thought into what I am writing- this made me feel rushed! Then again... I am tempted to open the page again and type some more... I'm so conflicted right now!

    1. Yeah that's my favorite thing about it. Because I tend to fall pretty to distractions... relatively easily.
GIVE IN TO THE URGE. DO IT AGAIN. AND AGAIN. XD

  2. Okay, I am officially converted. You have done your job well. I tried it out, and it is so cool!! I feel as though this will completely revolutionize my writing process.

  3. WOW THAT WAS STRESSFUL.
"He was lost. And alone. And this is stupid and I'm a failure." << AN EXCERPT OF MY WRITING HAHA. That was awesome, though!! I hate when I get stuck on, like, one word, and cannot bring myself to move on. Definitely planning on using it again soon- thanks for sharing!

*snickers* Well high five for doing it! XD OKAY YES I hate it when that happens also.

  4. I'm really scared to try it!!! LOL. It's sounds fun...but... O_O VERY STRESSFUL. HOW DO YOU SAVE YOUR WRITING ON THE APP?

    1. You can do it! IT IS STRESSFUL BUT THAT'S THE POINT. XD Well when the time is out it will let you copy and paste it. :)

  5. By the way, your blog looks amazing. Did you just use blogger's templates or did you use something else to design it?

  7. Woah. Talk about taking word-sprinting waaayyyy to seriously. (Hah. Sorta kidding here. XD)

Okay, so I wrote roughly 160 words in 3 minutes. Is that good? For me, yes. Very. Was it coherent? Absolutely not! I literally just rambling about nothing until the time was up.

So yeah. That was cool! I'll be us using it some, I just don't know how often. ;) Losing ANYTHING I've written freaks me out. ;P

    1. XD Yeah that's pretty much the idea!

Well... I guess that counts for something! XD At least you didn't lose your writing.

XD SAME which is why this thing is so motivating for me. :)

  8. I wrote 118 words in three minutes...Which is totally not impressive. This app, I've heard of before but I was always to scared to look it up. *shudders* I mean, it erases work! That would be horrid, but I might actually start using this some. It's deliciously scary.

*silently scrolls up to the link yet again* Now I'm going to see how slow I can possibly go till it deletes my work. *chuckles evilly*

    1. Actually that's not too bad. XD See I've never lost any writing before, so I'm pretty confident with it by now. :)

*whispers* I think there's like five seconds. *nodnod* XD

  9. So now I'm totally freaked out to try it out but I want to try it so badly but I don't want to lose my writing but I want to have something done -
Can you put, like, 30 seconds XD I think I'd work better in thirty- seconds blocks.

    ReplyDelete

    1. XD I'm pretty sure the lowest is three minutes... a thirty second block would be nice though! :)

  10. So I just tested it by typing random mumbo-jumbo to see how it would work. And ohmyword, I am waaaaayyyy to scared to use this. My biggest fear is losing all my work irretrievably. I don't think I can use this app, but the premise of it is quite smart. Thanks for sharing about it!

  11. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?! I suppose you will have to go in the acknowledgments section of my next book as being the reason that I got it typed so fast. Seriously, that was insane. I managed 217 words of rambling about the app itself on hyperspeed and then 189 of actual story in thoughtful typing mode. 3 minutes each! What? Thank goodness it counts backspace as still typing! I did another shot just to see what dying was like and it took about a 3-4 second lapse before it killed me and asked me to tweet my failure xD

Also, your blog. What is this awesome facelift? Because it is very classy. You have inspired me to re-examine my design yet again. Something's lacking and I'm going to find out what!

    1. IKR ISN'T IT AWESOME. XD Well you don't have to go THAT far lol. It is insane though. I write sooo much faster (and still somehow manage coherency? not sure how that works but *shrug* XD) You should try hardcore mode. It's awesome.

Thank you! I found it's easy to find blog templates to download for free on the internet, and they're not that hard to install either. :)

    2. I'm probably a blurt-it-out writer, but I have to be in the right moment, otherwise I'm just like "uhhhhhhh....." XD So hopefully this app will help me be more of a productive writer XD ~Grace

    3. Just tried it for like 3 minutes, writing the most random stuff, 'cause I wanted to see how I would be able to save it and what it does when I stop typing. It was soo cool! And I like it! It wasn't actually that hard to keep tying! This might become a new addiction... Thanks a lot! XD

    4. SAME. As soon as the thoughts get flowing I can really crank out some words. Ooh glad you liked it! You should try hardcore mode now. It's reallllyyy awesome. XD

  13. HOLY MACKEREL .
SHOULD I TRY THIS??? It's so tempting.
last year during national novel writing month i perfected the art of 400 words per minute (AT LEAST) because i had a habit of procrastinating until like 11:20 and trying to get my daily word count updated by 11:58. Yeah.

    So anyway.
    Your blog is cool.
Hey from a Kansas used-to-be homeschooler!

      *high five* :)

  14. I got 243 written in hardcore mode. But.. I was more rambling about my story. Not really writing. ;P
And then ... I got 258 written in hardcore mode when I was actually working on a piece from my story?!?! This may not be a good thing, but I'm hooked! Well, at least for the more action-based scenes of my story. xD

Oh, and I LOVE the new blog look/design!!

  15. Ooh, definitely sounds more than encouraging. I've tried stuff like this before, but my writing always comes out terrible when I try. I prefer to mull over my words like a cup of hot chocolate. :P

Incidentally, I've tried using your contact page recently, but it doesn't appear functional for me...either that, or I may have just sent you five messages by mistake. :-O Any ideas on how I might be able to contact you?

ANYway, I uhm haven't done this yet, because I haven't actually gotten on the computer/laptop in a long while. And we all know how hard it is to type on phone. (THAT IS WHU I ALWAUS HAVE SO MANY TYPOS (completely unedited sentence right dere))
So yeah, I plan on doing it soon, though.

  17. When I actually have a computer I need to try this!!

When I'm just casually writing I can get a thousand or two words written in an hour, but when I'm doing a word war I average on just over three thousand words an hour. The best I've ever gotten was four thousand words in an hour, but that was during NaNoWriMo...

Speaking of which, have you done NaNo? Because that is an insane motivator.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You do! :)

Yeah just casually writing for me is probably 1k an hour. I don't think I could pull off anything above 2k in an hour... XD

I've done Camp before, but not the normal NaNo where you have to do 50k. :)

  18. Agh! Amanda told me about this too! But I forgot about it and I only just tried yesterday. It's scary, but really cool.

Are you doing Camp NaNoWriMo in July? I want to. Maybe.

  19. Oh, heavens... This app sounds terrifying. AND AMAZING. I'm tempted to try it now, but I'm already nervous about it. Lol! I've lost entire word documents before, so I cannot imagine how quickly this would get out of control for me. XD

(By the way, I just stumbled onto your blog & thought I'd say hi! I personally think that there are simply not enough guy bloggers out there & I'm always tickled when I find one. You fellas bring a different perspective to the blogiverse & to be honest, it's really refreshing. Anywho, cannot wait to read more from you!)
