10 Summer-y Books to Add to Your TBR + 10 Books I Hope to Read this Summer

GUYS IT'S ALMOST SUMMER. And we all know what summer means- it means more reading time.

So naturally since you have more reading time, YOU NEED MORE BOOKS. (just... pretend like you're not already drowning in your TBR.) Obviously that's what this post is about.

Also, I can feel you questioning me. DO NOT QUESTION ME. "Summer-y" is most definitely a word.

Just a quick shout-out to Nadine because her own post of summer book recommendations inspired this post. She's pretty awesome and TONS of fun, so you guys should go give her a follow if you haven't already. :D

1. The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

OH SO YES I'M THROWING THIS AT YOU AGAIN. My philosophy here is pretty much 1) no this book isn't particularly summer-y but 2) there's never a bad time to read it. Why not read it this summer if you haven't already? :D

2. Go Teen Writers by Jill Williamson and Stephanie Morrill

Not only does summer mean more reading time, it means MORE WRITING TIME. And this is pretty much the most helpful book on writing that I've ever read. *nods* It's more about what to do after you're done with your first draft than the actual process of writing your novel, but it's still fantastic.

3. Storming by K. M. Weiland

This is SUCH A COOL BOOK. Plus, it's very spunky and light-hearted. (spunky/light-hearted = SUMMER) Basically think of how you would feel if you were free flying through the sky and the air was rushing over you. THAT'S HOW THIS BOOK FEELS.

4. Martin Hospitality by Abigayle Claire

DO YOU SEE THIS COVER? Does it not just practically scream "SUMMER"? This book actually isn't all that summer-y as far as the storyline goes? But it just looks. so. summer-y. PLUS I LOVE THIS ONE. So I'm including it anyways. xD

5. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Guys, it's pirates. Obviously anything to do with pirates just FEELS like summer. Plus it's tons of fun and a classic! :D (ALSO LOOK AT THIS AMAZING COPY)

6. Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer

This book is basically just a giant boatload of summer-flavored feels. It may or may not have melted my Vulcan heart AND IDEK HOW OR WHY. I'll get back to you on that.

Also this has a consistent theme of "FOOD" and I approve 100%.

7. This Changes Everything by Jaquelle Crowe

Did you buy this yet??? I did post a review not too long ago, so if you want my specific thoughts you can go check that out. I think this is a FANTASTIC book for summer because with no school, you're going to have a ton of extra free time! And this book has some great, practical tips on how to redeem the time.

The logic is flawless. This is definitely a summer book. *sage nod*

8. Chasing Jupiter by Rachel Coker

This is one of those other covers that scream "SUMMER." And I don't remember HOW exactly this book relates to summer but I REMEMBER IT'S SUMMER-Y. Just trust me on this one.

9. Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool

This book is pretty much 40% nostalgic adventuring, 40% friendship, and 20% SUMMER. It don't think it technically takes place during summer break... but it does take place during some sort of break from school. (Spring break, maybe? IDK APPARENTLY I NEED TO REREAD.) It's brilliantly written and one of my all time favorites.

10. The Warden and the Wolf King by Andrew Peterson

THIS SERIES IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE FANTASY SERIES. (book one is On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness) And I don't think I've mentioned them on here? So obviously I needed to fix that.

How does this relate to summer? Because this book is SUPER LONG. So you'll only have time to read it during the summer, obviously. #logic

Fiction

1. Exiles by Jaye L. Knight

THIS RELEASES IN JULY. Only a few more months to wait. I think I can make it. Maybe.

2. Wingfeather Tales by Andrew Peterson

Like I said, this is one of my favorite fantasy series. So... why haven't I read this?? IDK HONESTLY. We got it for Christmas... and it's sort of just been sitting awkwardly on the shelf, waiting to be read. I'M COMING, BOOK. I'LL GET TO YOU SOON, I PROMISE.

3. The Girl Who Could See by Kara Swanson

First off: THE COVER. It's STUNNING. I legit shelved this book on Goodreads based mostly off the cover. xD But some of my friends have reviewed it, and apparently it's amazing? So I'll be buying it when it releases in June, I think.

4. The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau

This is sort of a modern classic and everyone loves it. I STILL HAVEN'T READ IT? Also I've seen the movie which is pretty much the worst crime to any book lover. #SORRY

5. The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

So it's a historical MG novel... and I've literally had nothing but success with historical MG novels. (*cough* Clare Vanderpool *cough*) Obviously I need to read more of these.

6. One Came Home by Amy Timberlake

Another historical MG novel that looks plain awesome and I've had it on my TBR for waaaay too long. Plus, it's also a murder mystery?? HELLO YES I AM 100% HERE.

Nonfiction

7. Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

I'm attempting to tackle this tome mostly because my next novel (one I haven't told you about, because I'm a ninja writer) may or may not have something to do with this time period.

8. The Unexpected Adventure by Lee Strobel and Mark Mittelberg

I've had this one also on my TBR for aaageess. I need to crack down and read it because it looks fantastic!

9. The Other Side of Infamy by Jim Downing

This is written by a veteran of WW2 and Pearl Harbor and it's about the Christian and war. Obviously I need this book in my life ASAP.

10. The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White

Sooo I bought this book about a year ago... and I sorta forgot about it. PROBABLY BECAUSE IT'S SO TINY. I think it just got lost on my bookshelf, but I definitely need to read it at some point this summer.

This isn't my ENTIRE summer TBR (hopefully I read more than 10 books this summer haha), but these are my priority books. What about you? What are you planning on reading this summer? ARE YOU TAKING MY RECOMMENDATIONS?? Have you read any of these books? xD

  1. I was just mentioning summer tbr piles today actually. XD funny you did a post on it. :P YES SUMMER-Y IS TOTALLY A WORD XD
    Chasing Jupiter--set in Georgia--nearly constant summer-yness(also totally a word)--there you go XP
*goes to add lotsa things I must read* :P
have I ever mentioned I love book posts? cuz I do and they're cool. XD
have you ever considered bookshelf tours? bc just from pics you've taken, it looks like you have a toooooonnn of good ones. XD

    1. #Greatmindsthinkalike, of course. xD YES THANK YOU IT TOTALLY IS. *high fives*
OH TRUUE. I obviously don't remember that book well enough haha. Rereads must also happen this summer. xP
No but I sort of get that feel from everyone? LIKE EVERYONE LOVES BOOK-ISH POSTS. (at least that's the impression I'm getting)
I've /seen/ bookshelf tours on my friends blogs before... but I don't actually know exactly what they are. So maybe I would do them?? NOT SURE THOUGH BECAUSE WHAT ARE THEY XD

WINGFEATHER SAGA!!!!!!!!!!!! AND WINGFEATHER TALES *babbles into the universe and turns heads everywhere*
Sorry. I tend to go into hyperactive fangirl mode over Wingfeather Saga... #SorryNotSorry

The War That Saved My Life is actually really good! I don't love MG Historical most of the time... but that one is amazing and kind of brutal and has a sequel coming at the end of the summer so YASSSSS.
And I want to read the Girl Who Could See also! I need to buy it but I'm pretty much broke from buying Tales of Goldstone Wood so... yeah.

I'm reading Hamilton right now, and it's good. It's very heavy and very... heavy, and there's some skimmable stuff about his financial plans and stuff (unless that kind of thing interests you XD). It's really a great book. Have you listened to the musical? It's... kind of different from what you'd be looking for XD but still really good. *fangirls even more*

I must read Ilyon Chronicles but as I said... broke bookworms. :( I hate the feeling of having no money...

This Changes Everything and Martin Hospitality were both SOOOO GOOOD and I need to read Go Teen Writers. As for the rest of these... yeah, I kind of agree with you XD Maybe I should give Navigating Early a re-read. I didn't love it last time I read it (although I did like Moon over Manifest a lot better...)

This is a great summer TBR! I'm going to do a post like this next week! #HasASchedule #IsLying

    1. YES I KNOW I LOVE THAT SERIES. Especially The Warden and the Wolf King... the first one wasn't my favorite but the series got better as it progressed. :D

IT HAS SO MANY GOOD REVIEWS? And I don't know that much about it but I read the content review and that says it's clean, so based off that I'm willing to give it a shot! :D
SAME. Is the cover not just the coolest thing you've ever seen??? xD I'm always excited when I find self-published books that have CRAZY AWESOME COVERS.

Haha yes I can see that. :P IT'S SO LONG. At first I was like "Oh, I should read Washington first (by the same author) because it's shorter," but then I looked up Washington and it's... 900ish pages. xD I haven't listened to the musical! I don't listen to much music period though haha. I've heard a lot about it though. :D

YES YOU MUST. Maybe a summer job would work out well for you? :P

Yeesss they totally were. *nods* AND YES YOU DEFINITELY DO. It's super good and incredibly helpful- almost like a mini resource book. Oh see I liked Moon Over Manifest too but not /nearly/ as much as Navigating Early.

      Thanks! Cool, I'll watch out for it. :D #Haha #Getadryerasecalendar :P

  4. OKAY. This post is epic.
I LITERALLY JUST PUT A HOLD ON THE OUTSIDERS AT THE LIBRARY! I have been wanting to read it for a long time, but never got around to it. I am so excited to finally read it. Plus names like Ponyboy and Sodapop and Two Bit are sooo original and weird and awesome.

Ohhhh, Alexander Hamilton is a great book! I read a lot of historical biographies and non fiction and that book is one of my faves. The author just researches the topic to pieces and its a great read! Yesssss....and The Girl Who Could See looks soooooo good. Gonna add that to my list too! Great post!

YES OMW GOOD JOB I APPROVE. You will love it. <3 Aahhh I know I LOOOVE the names in that book. But then again I love everything in that book. xD Jonny Curtis is my favorite character though, even though he has the least unusual name. :D

Okay glad to hear that! I'm excited to give it a shot. HOPEFULLY I CAN MAKE IT THROUGH THE WHOLE THING. I'm pretty sure half the reason I put it on my blog was just to keep myself accountable haha. xD Yesss I know doesn't it? AND THE COVER IS FANTASTIC. :D

  5. Cool suggestions. I may have to take a look at some of those!
Just curious, have you read/heard of The Baker Family Adventures book series? They're fantastic. I mean, a family of Christian Homeschooling farmers who travel the world working with detectives and spies? It's pretty cool, I think.)

    2. Yeah, her first publishing company did go out of business. But she got a new one, though.
And just a few months ago she just came out with her....sixth book. I think it's the sixth. But she's a fantastic author.

    1. I actually did read the first Dreamhouse Kings book... but I didn't really like it?? It wasn't really my type of thing and I wasn't a fan of the writing style. :P And yes I did read Narnia when I was a kid haha :D

      Delete
    2. Honestly, I didn't care for the writing style, either. The last book was what got me. :) When they saw... SOMEONE! *flails* I almost cried???
The first book was kinda... BLEH, but the last few were just darn fancy. ;D
I love Aslan. And Mr. Tumnus. lol. :D

Buuut I NEED to get a copy of Go Teen Writers. I had to chose between that and some of K.M. Weiland's writing craft books and I chose K.M. Weiland's. Now I'm out to get Go Teen Writers. *draws sword and stalks after the book*

  18. Out of all 20 books you listed here I've read... 2. And those were Martin Hospitality and Hope Was Here, and both of them were amazing! :D I have The Outsiders. I bought that back when you read it earlier this year but... I haven't read it yet. That should probably go on my TBR for this summer. I actually don't have a TBR for this summer yet. You say that we're going to have more reading time, but not so for me. For 8 weeks this summer I'll have like no reading time. :(

I really like you summer TBR! They look like really good books. :)

    1. Haha well I've only read 10 of them... so I'm just eight books ahead. :P YEESS both of those were super good. OOH YOU BOUGHT THE OUTSIDERS??? Thanks! I hope they are haha :D

    2. Haha, yeah, and I want to read the others. I think I have all of them on my to-read shelf on Goodreads. Um, that's classified. You know, top secret ninja stuff. ;) Just kidding, I work at a summer camp. And with the schedule they have, I don't have a ton of free time. But it's a lot of fun! :D

  19. first, I object to the origin of this post YOU CAN'T CATALOG BOOKS BY SEASONAL WEATHER OKAY but I should try reading some of these. also WHY DO YOU GET ALL THE EPIC BOOK COVERS?? it's totally unfair xD

also yes the city of ember is an awesome book. it's actually a series?? But I didn't like the third book like at all xP the other ones were interesting tho xD

    1. UM HELLO YES YOU CAN I JUST DID. #watchme xD Also yes you should... and idk? I judge books by their covers all the time though so maybe that's part of it lol.

aahh can't wait to read it! yes I've heard... OMW I'VE HEARD THAT ALSO. /Nobody/ likes the third one?? xD So I'm thinking I might just stick to the first. Idk, we'll see. :D

      Delete
    2. *still doesn't think books can be categorized like that but whatever* XD ooohhh a book cover judge-r. I think I judge by the feeling of paper? I can't stand the brownish sandpaper like paper *shivers* I'll only read it if desperate ha

well the third one was kinda...weird?.. and then only at the end of the book you got a cool thing that didn't rly correlate with the other books but was just kinda cool. not worthy of the read in my opinion.

Stick to books 1, 2, and 4 and basically it's like the trilogy with the same characters. the third book is another character jsyk (sounds kinda messy when I explain it but yep haha)

      Delete
    3. ... by the feeling of the paper... OMW SARAH THAT'S SO STRANGE. XD But... I guess it makes sense? Kind of?

oohhhh okay so the third book is sort of just it's own random insertion that doesn't relate to the rest of the series at all. *nods* I've read stuff like that- I'll have to try your suggestion because that sounds right :D

  25. So many good books on that list! So did you finally get to read Deliver?? (I saw it on your shelf.) Isn't it gorgeous??

    1. YES I DID. I LOVED IT. Best Acktar book, hands down- also best series finale ever. xD It is gorgeous but it also doesn't match with the other books??? So that sorta threw more for a loop haha :D

      Delete
    2. Yeah, I was slightly disappointed that it was a different style cover, but oh well. And actually, I think it was my least favorite of the series. (It was still amazing, I mean, it's a Blades of Acktar book!) I felt like the plot was really similar to book one. :( So yeah. It was great, but not my favorite of the series. :P I hope we can agree to disagree on that.

      Delete
    3. Whoa, really? That kinda surprises me but I understand what you're saying... it did feel similar-ish to book one. *nods* But I really liked how it was more character driven than all the other ones. :D

    4. Yes, I love character driven books too! Martyn and Kaylee though . . . XD

  26. Okay this is about the fifth post I've seen like this and I LOVE THEM AND MUST STEAL THE IDEA. Ahem. Thanks for posting this epic thing xD.

Everyone and their pet hedgehog seems to love The Wingfeather Saga and I'VE OWNED THE EDGE OF THE DARK SEA OF DARKNESS FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS so I don't really have an excuse for not finishing the first book yet? But I'm halfway through it now so I fully intend to get it all read BEFORE summer :D.

Wait wait wait - The Girl Who Could See is self published?. Whoa. Totally thought it was traditionally published, it looks SO GOOD! Very much impressed over here. And EXILES! Ohmygoodness, I'm so wildly excited for that book. I'm re-reading the series right now so that everything is fresh in my mind when it comes out *nodnod*.

*scrolls through your list again and promptly adds basically everything to my summer tbr* Well thanks for helping my tbr grow, I guess xD. Awesome post, Jon!

    1. YES YOU MUST. I actually haven't seen that many?? Which sorta surprised me because more people should totally do them. *nods*

THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S SO GOOD. I mean, at least the series is. The first book wasn't actually my favorite? I mean it was good but sorta eh writing-wise and written to a younger audience, I think. The rest of the series is SO GOOD THOUGH. So if you end up not loving On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, definitely still read the rest of the series. :D

IKR? I'm sort of questioning it also, but on Goodreads it says that it's from Createspace so APPARENTLY IT IS. No one can tell though haha. xD AND YES EXILES. I'm super excited for that one also!!

*thumbs up* Good plan! XD Thank you!

  27. I tried reading Treasure Island, but gave up because of the way everyone talked in the book. I would get confused as to what was being said exactly. I've read Chasing Jupiter and The Outsiders. Both very good books.
I've seen the movie City of Ember, like, years ago, but never read the book. It was kinda weird, but I remember liking it okay.

I also want to read The Girl Who Could See! I saw it yesterday and I don't even know what it's about, but the cover is AMAZING and I must read it!!
I also want to read that fantasy series you said was a favorite, because I love fantasy. I plan on reading the rest of the Ranger's Apprentice over the summer and more non-fiction, because it will make me smarter and I don't read enough of it.

    1. LOL yes I can definitely see that being... confusing. xD I really liked it just because PIRATES + ADVENTURE = ME. XP Yeesss The Outsiders is my favorite! :D

SAME. I don't honestly know what it's about either? #oops
Ooh okay if you like fantasy then you will probably like this series. *nods* The first book is sort of eh but don't give up if you don't like that one- the rest of the series is fantastic! :D

    2. I'll just stick to watching Treasure Planet I guess, haha(:

A classic example of judging a book by its cover, lol. Shame on us. Watch it be completely awful! (I hope not though!!)
Okay, I won't! I can't wait to check it out.
