#CampNaNoCountdown: What will you be writing?

When I say I've decided to start an impromptu, unofficial link-up/blog post series about Camp NaNo, please don't freak out because I'm already over here doing ENOUGH FREAKING OUT FOR BOTH OF US.

But yes. Anyways. That's neither here nor there, but the point is: Camp NaNo approaches!! And I'm excited for it!! And we all know what happens when I get excited about something- I BLOG ABOUT IT. It's just the way these things work.

(I probably just made #CampNaNoCountdown a hashtag because it fits better on the graphic. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.)

So let me just explain how this is going to work: For the rest of June, I'll be posting NaNo related questions here @ Fishing For Ideas. The point is to make sure all of us are ready/prepared/not freaking out and to try and get us motivated to write aaalll the words during July. Let's look at the rules.

Rule #1: ANSWER THE QUESTION.

And that's actually the only rule because who even follows the rules when it comes to these things. xD Basically all you have to do is answer the question I ask, whether it be on your own blog, in a comment, or on social media. (You can even use my graphic if you want, or make your own, OR NOT EVEN USE A GRAPHIC. It's all pretty chill.)

You don't even have to link back to me if you don't want to! But if you do then you'll probably make my day and make me super happy. :D :D

So yeah I honestly don't even know what to call this thing? I guess it's technically a link-up? IN WHICH CASE THIS IS MY FIRST LINK-UP. #win

And yes I know you're wondering if I'm actually going to answer the question or if I'm just going to ramble on endlessly to try and make this long enough to be a legit post.

DON'T WORRY. I'M ANSWERING THE QUESTION NOW. And yes, I will definitely be answering any questions I post because I want in on on my own link-up, obviously. xD Actually, I may even go farther than that and get some of my cabinmates to answer some of my future questions. Who knows?

Okay so I've actually started a new project that I've been working on for about... a month now? I'm not saying a TON about it, but it's a YA historical fantasy novel set during the Revolutionary War Era. Also dragons. And political intrigue. AND SIBLING RELATIONSHIPS because who cares about romance when you can write about siblings. Siblings are sooooo much more entertaining, honestly. Plus, it's written in first person split pov.

But when I'm done, it will probably be at least 100k and it will probably have at least one sequel. [key words: PROBABLY]

I know I said I wasn't going to say that much about it but here have a random snippet because why not:

“One of the dragons is injured. You’re going to help me bandage it.” “Um.” He opens his mouth, then snaps it shut, then reopens it. “I thought they were wild.” “They are.” “I thought they were very wild.” I turn around. “They are.” “Are you crazy?” Gabe follow me into the main room of the shop. “I’m all for defying Master North, but I’d prefer to stay alive in the process.” “Oh, please. It’s not as if I’m going to let him out of his cage.” Gabe throws his hands up in the air. “How else are you going to get the bandage on him?” I bite my lip. “I’m… not sure yet. I’ll figure something out.” “You’ll figure something out.” His words drip with disbelief. “It will be fine. I know what I’m doing.” He swings open the back door for me. “No you don’t. You just said you’re still figuring something out.” “But I have a basic idea.” London is just beginning to throw off it’s nighclothes and break free of its slumber, and the sun heralds the death of dawn and the beginning of the day. If we’re going to do this, it needs to be fast. Master North will be up before long. “We don’t have any time for this. I need some meat from the cellar and some sort of cloth…” My mind is spinning together a hasty and probably ridiculous plan. “I can’t believe this.” Gabe says. “You’re supposed to be the mature and sensible older sister. I’m supposed to be the one with the crazy ideas.” “Older sisters have crazy ideas. Sometimes.” Gabe snorts. “Apparently.” “I’m just… embracing my wild side.” “You’ll need it, if you’re going to survive a wild dragon.”

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. That's what I'll be writing for Camp! What about you? What are YOU writing? Do you have a synopsis you'd like to share? And pleeeaase don't forget to hit me with your favorite snippets if you have any!

Again, you can answer this anywhere. In a comment, on your blog, on social media, in your head, LITERALLY ANYWHERE. (although granted, if you do it in your head no one else will get to hear about your awesome ideas) XD

  2. I know what I'm writing! Mwah ha ha! But I'm pretty booked for June on my blog (which is crazy I mean I post approximately three times a week). So... I'm writing Wings, a fantasy retelling of World War I. *huggles story* I'm so freaking excited about that. Some ideas are just THE BEST.

Your story's pretty amazing, too! I can see this becoming one of my favorites if you get it published ;)

      Thanks! :D

  3. I really like that snippet you posted - makes me want to read more! As for my Nano, I'm still trying to work out a plot, but I really want to do a story with this theater ghost that had been hanging around my head for the last month or so. I love his character, and really want to give him a story, but let's see.
    Best of luck to you!

I won't be doing nano this month.. I'm just very busy and lacking in any story inspiration. :/
Hopefully, I'll get my muse back soon and my time, but until then, I'll sit this one out.

I'm so happy for everyone doing this though! Godspeed, y'all!

But I HAD to comment because YOU'RE WRITING A STORY ABOUT DRAGONS.
    Dragons!
    DRAGONS.
    DRAGOOONSSSS!!!!!!
    My greatest love!

Your story sounds SO. EPIC. And fun! And I adore sibling relationships in books. It seems like we don't get nearly enough of that.

YES I AM. *FLAILS* I'M GLAD YOU APPROVE. XP

Thank you! Yeess I totally agree- I can't remember the last YA book I read with siblings in it. (although, to be fair, I haven't read a YA book in a fairly long time... xD)

Thanks! Hope editing/life goes well for you! :D

I've never done NanoWriMo, except for myself, if that makes sense. And my summer is pretty busy. But, hopefully everyone has a good time and is able to get their goal. I'm hoping to get edits done of my first book and a first draft done of my second book.

Ooh you should definitely give it a shot sometime! Camp NaNo is different than normal NaNoWriMo (the one in November) because you pick your own goal to set, instead of having a 50k word goal set for you. :D Good luck with your editing/first drafting though!

  11. Hi, Jonathan! I commented on one of your posts a while back, and I've kinda been stalking ever since! =)
I'm not doing Camp NaNo, but this was super fun to read! I've been thinking about writing a fantasy story in Revolutionary Era, so I was excited to hear about you doing it. Your story sounds great! "because who cares about romance when you can write about siblings." I LOVE THIS. I like romance when it's high quality, but it's SO over-done. Everyone seems to think they need to force a romance into their story. I always appreciate different relationships, just for variety. And I love sibling relationships!
"Older sisters have crazy ideas. Sometimes." From a older sister times three, YES! =)

    1. Hey Hanna! Glad to see that you've stuck around! :D
Great minds think alike, obviously. xP *high fives* That's super cool that we're doing the same era.
YES ROMANCE IS SO OVERDONE THANK YOU. Siblings are so much more fun hahaha. :D I have six younger siblings and one older one, so I'm thinking I can represent siblings relationships accurately. xP

    2. LOL! Same!! I commented once forever ago and I haven't commented since but have been reading every post and anxiously waiting for more. XD
So, hi Jonathan! I'm Jaclynn - nice to meet you. ;D
I agree, sibling relationships are awesome!! I'm personally always drawn to romance, but I do love sibling relationships, too. Especially when there's a good brother/sister relationship. I feel like sisters always complain about their brothers and how annoying they are, but come on - not all brothers are like that. So I always appreciate when there's a brother and sister who have a good relationship. ;D I thought your snippet really showed a realism to sibling interaction, though! I liked it! :D
I'm not participating in Camp NaNo (currently in a huge slump), but good luck with your goals!
      ~Jaclynn~

      Delete
    3. YES, Jaclynn! I also like both romance and sibling relationships, when they're done well! And I find the "annoying little brother" stereotype rather maddening, though I have to remind myself that not everyone can have the best brothers in the world, like I do. =)

    4. WOW GLAD TO SEE I HAVE SO MANY ANONYMOUS STALKERS. XD Super cool to meet you guys though, glad you swung by to introduce yourselves!

  12. Yay, this will be fabulous. I think I'll maybe answer these questions on my blog sometime, so I won't give anything away here :D But mine is fantasy. And just a question cause you seem to be an experienced NaNoer (is that even a word?) what would you recommend me do about cabins? Should I let them assign me by genre, or age, or what? (Some friends said I could start a private cabin but idk yet because I really don't know many people to invite.)

P.S. Your books sounds so awesome I want to add it to my tbr already but you haven't even written the whole thing yet xD xD

    1. Thanks! Ooh alright that sounds good, I'll be stalking your blog for more details. :D Hmm okay so my honest advice is to DEFINITELY make a private cabin. *nods* Otherwise you're going to get sorted into a cabin with a whole bunch of strangers and that could go very bad very fast. ;) (Hmm... maybe someone else has a cabin you could join? Try asking around. :D I would just invite you to join the one I'm in but it's already full.)

      Thanks! :D

    2. Thanks for the good advice :D

  13. Awesome! I'm looking forward to more #CampNaNoCountdown posts!! I'll answer this question here but maybe some future ones on my blog. So, I'll actually be writing on two stories for July. Don't know if that's technically aloud or not but . . . I'm doing it. #myrules

The first one is a short story I'm writing for my sister's birthday. It's a western . . . in modern day. XD Check my NaNo account for more info. ;)

The second is my ongoing WIP, book one in the Arkinland Chronicles. My synopsis and a few snippets are here:

    5. Yep, and I'm going to one in August too! I'll actually be gone for most of July . . . so writing is going to be pretty difficult. I'm working on those multitasking skills. ;)

      Thanks! You too!

  15. I'm so excited for Camp NaNo!! When Julia asked me if I wanted to join her cabin, I had LITERALLY just decided that I was going to do camp nano in July and made my project. I kid you not. I didn't think I'd be in a cabin. I thought I was gonna end up lone wolfing it like last time. So excited to be in the same cabin as you! :D

No, stop! Snippets! I'm telling you, each one you share is like torture. THEY'RE ALL SO GOOD! Seriously, I loove that snippet. You should do a post on how you choose snippets to share. I could use that, because I'm really bad at it. :P

As for what I'm writing this July... I'm going to be working on the rewrite of Strangers. So many issues with it. But I'm kind of excited to rewrite it, because I have so many ideas that I think will help make the story better overall.

Um...so I honestly have no idea what I'm doing in July. Eheh. :P You'll just have to wait and see a) if I'm doing Camp and b) what project I'm working on if I do. Have fun waitinggggg. *smirks*

  23. Cool post, bro. Needs more... Actually, it appears to have the correct amount of dragons. LOL Wish you the best of luck with your NaNoWriMo! I thought about doing to years ago, but I write so sporadically that it would never work for me. More power to ya!

And now to answer your own question! My current project, filling in the time between agent queries on my last book, is a YA romance novel with a twist (but isn’t that what they all say?) It’s about a boy who finally gets the girl... just in time for her to move away. That’s about all I can say right now. LOL Again, great article and good luck!

  24. Yesss, I'm also pumped for NaNo!

I'm probably going to write "book 2" for CampNaNo of a series I've been working on. I shan't say much, but it does have a shipwreck, a near-death experience or two, lost treasures, and time traveling. (And even better, it's based on a true historical event...plus or minus a few things... ;)

I'm not sure if I'm going to be doing NaNo. I'm going to be gone for about half of July helping with/being in camps, so it'll be an insane month. Especially if it turns out as usual and I only get 6 hours a sleep a night and almost absolutely no free time during the camp I'll be helping at. :)

    1. OKAY JULY IS JUST THE MONTH FOR CAMPS. I know at least two other people who also have summer camp during the month of July! I guess that makes sense for /Camp/ NaNo to also be in July then. xD Hope you have tons of fun at your camp though!

  29. Oh, now I need more snippets!!! *Flails*
I won't be doing NaNo this time, but I am writing!!!
I'm writing a teen fiction at the moment, and I think I'm actually going to KEEP writing in this WIP.... YAY! It's a mix of comedy and drama. At first, I would've said comedy ALL. TEH. WAY. But...... I added some serious/heartbreaking/heartwarming stuff in it, and it is now perfectly balanced. XD

  30. HEY, JONATHAN *waves* I haven't been around in a while. *ahem* O.O Your story sounds really interesting!! Nice snippet - I like it. AND ALSO YES, sibling relationships feel so rare in fiction and THEY ARE SO GOOD. *thumbs up* Me? I'm writing more in a novel I wrote in for April... It's a dystopian/futuristic/YA novel (called Chosen for now) and I'M HOPING IT COMES TOGETHER, haha. XD

  31. I'm writing about dragons too! Except... mine are small and snarky. Ahem.

YOUR SNIPPET THOUGH! I need more. :p

  32. THAT SNIPPET. Oh boy, I want this story really really bad - WRITE THE THING, okay? (and I joined in the linkup so THANK YOU for giving me a post to write when my mind was utterly blank xD)

  33. Hey Jonathan! A smol new follower here. Before I get to the part of my comment that's actually, you know, related to the post, I just want to say I love how accessible your blog feels to anyone of any faith (or lack of it) (even though you're personally Christian). I'm agnostic, and I usually don't follow or comment on blogs run by Christians because I often get a feeling they'd really rather I not be there. BUT. Besides also including reading and writing (two of my favorite things), your blog seems super friendly and open, and your Christian perspective is really interesting to read. I look forward to reading all your future posts, Christianity-related or not!

SO, now that that completely unrelated segment is out of the way....

DUDE. YOUR NANO NOVEL SOUNDS AWESOME. I absolutely love the Revolutionary War, and fantasy is my favorite genre. You'd better be posting more awesome snippets after Camp is over XD I, sadly, will be unable to do Camp this year due to family vacation and a new internship, but I'll still be writing as much as I can and cheering y'all on! *confetti* Happy writing!

  34. Oh my word, your book sounds /amazing/. Dragons and the Revolutionary War and just... /yes/.

I'm working on the second draft of I Forgot, my November NaNo novel. It's going... slowly.

But yay Camp NaNo! One more week now.
